How Long Does a Bathroom Renovation Really Take

How Long Does a Bathroom Renovation Really Take

A bathroom renovation is one of the most transformative upgrades you can make to your home, but it’s also one of the most detailed, depending on just how much renovating you’re planning.

From plumbing and waterproofing to fixtures and finishes, a lot happens behind the scenes. One of the first (and most important) questions homeowners typically ask our team is: how long does a bathroom renovation really take?

The short answer? It depends.

The longer answer is that a well-planned renovation follows a set of stages that require considered planning. When you account for this, your renovation might take longer than expected, but it becomes far more predictable, manageable, and way less stressful.

Why it’s important to plan your bathroom renovation carefully

Before you begin any tangible work on your renovation, it’s important to sit down and plan it out. Planning is where you’ll select layouts, finishes, fittings and fixtures. This is where curated ranges and expert guidance make a real difference.

Having access to thoughtfully selected products such as vanities, tapware, tiles and accessories that work beautifully together can streamline your decision-making and reduce delays. Expert guidance along the way ensures your vision is not only feasible but genuinely the best option for your family's needs and home.

Planning is also when measurements are confirmed, technical requirements are reviewed, and any custom elements are finalised. Rushing can lead to changes mid-build, which can extend timelines and compromise outcomes, so it’s crucial to take your time.

Recommended timeframe: 1-2 weeks

What are the stages of a bathroom renovation?

Once you have a plan in place, it’s time to get to work. Here at Bathroom Space, we believe there are four clear stages to any good bathroom renovation:

1. Preparation and demolition

This stage is pretty self-explanatory. To make way for the new, the old has got to go. This is where you’ll remove old fixtures, tiling, and flooring, and prepare surfaces for next steps.

This stage can be extremely satisfying. While some work can be completed without prior experience, it’s important to work with professionals, especially for plumbing and electrical changes (or risk additional delays!).

Estimated timeframe: A few days to a week, depending on the size of the room and the amount of demolition required.

2. Plumbing and electrical work

You might consider this the ‘invisible’ stage. The work across the plumbing and electrical elements won’t be visible when your renovation is complete, but they’ll ensure your bathroom works smoothly and efficiently for years to come.

Whether you’re moving fixtures around or simply replacing certain elements, precision matters more than speed. This is especially true if you’re adding heated elements, such as a heated towel rack or underfloor heating,

Having professionals on board to look after these aspects is essential to prevent issues down the line.

Estimated timeframe: 1-2 weeks, depending on the work required.

3. Waterproofing and tiling

Once plumbing and electrical elements are ticked off, it’s time to prepare your bathroom for use. This means ensuring sufficient waterproofing of walls, ceilings, and floors to prevent damp and mould and prepare surfaces for tiling. This process requires time to dry and cure, and cannot be rushed.

Once waterproofing is complete, tiling can begin. Depending on tile size, layout complexity, and the size of the space, this process can also take time. Larger tiles, detailed patterns, or feature walls can add time, but also character. This is where your design vision really begins to take shape.

Estimated timeframe: 2-3 weeks, including curing and drying timeframes.

4. Fixtures and finishing touches

The shortest stage can also be the most rewarding. Once the tiling is dry, you can begin adding the finishing touches. This is where vanities, taps, light fixtures, mirrors, flooring and everything else you’ve carefully chosen during your planning stage can fall into place and bring your renovation together.

It’s during this stage that we often see homeowners develop new ideas or realise their original ideas don’t work as well as they hoped. Again, this is where expert guidance can help by providing alternatives and advice on what will truly bring your new bathroom together.

Estimated timeframe: A few days to a week.

So, how long does a bathroom renovation really take?

For most standard bathroom renovations, the build itself typically takes three to five weeks. When you factor in planning and product selection, the entire process often spans six to eight weeks from first ideas to completion.

More complex renovations, such as those involving structural changes or premium finishes, may take longer but deliver more tailored results for homeowners seeking to add their unique touch to this vital space.
