How to Install a Toilet Properly: Step-by-Step DIY Guide
A well-designed bathroom is built on a cohesive selection of features and fixtures; one of the most essential of which is your toilet.
Whether you’re doing a full DIY renovation or have simply decided it’s time for a new ‘throne’, knowing how to properly install your new toilet can help save on costs and grow your confidence when approaching your project.
What you’ll need to properly install a new toilet
With the right preparation, installing a new toilet is a task many capable DIYers can manage successfully. But before you get started, you’ll need to ensure you have a robust selection of tools.
We recommend having the following in easy reach:
- Adjustable wrench
- Screwdriver
- Tape measure
- Spirit level
- Wax ring or rubber bowl seal
- Closet bolts
- Flexible water connector
- Some old towels or blankets to clear up any excess water or leaks.
Some of the essentials for fitting your new toilet will come with it (such as any specific bolts, screws, etc), but it’s worth checking through the instructions to check whether there are any other specific tools you might need.
What to do before you begin installing a new toilet
Before you begin removing your old toilet or doing anything else, remember to:
- Turn off the water supply at the isolation valve and flush the existing toilet to empty the tank.
- Disconnect the water supply line and carefully remove the old suite.
- Clean the flange area thoroughly (the circular part of the toilet that connects it to the drainpipe and secures it to the floor) so the new bowl sits securely and evenly. This is also vital for preventing leaks.
- Ensure you have all the tools you need and maybe the number of a good plumber (just for back up if needed!).
- Put down some towels or blankets to assist with any rogue water leaks, protect flooring and generally help with easy clean up when you’re done.
As step by step guide to installing your new toilet
Step 1: Check measurements carefully
Before positioning your new toilet, confirm the set-out measurement (the distance from the finished wall to the centre of the waste pipe). In Australia, this is commonly 140mm or 180mm, though variations can exist, especially in older homes.
Measuring for the correct fit prevents adjustments later and keeps the overall bathroom layout visually balanced. If you’re unsure, refer to the specification sheet provided with your new chosen toilet design.

Step 2: Position the bowl and seal
Insert the closet bolts into the flange and place the wax ring or bowl seal securely around the outlet. Carefully lower the toilet bowl onto the flange, aligning it with the bolts.
Apply gentle, even pressure to compress the seal. Avoid rocking the toilet bowl excessively, as this can compromise the seal and lead to leaks. Once positioned, check alignment with your spirit level to ensure it sits perfectly straight.

Step 3: Secure the bowl
Tighten the nuts onto the closet bolts evenly. Take care not to overtighten, as porcelain can crack under excessive pressure. If your model includes floor fixing brackets, secure them according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 4: Install the cistern
For close-coupled toilet suites, attach the cistern to the bowl using the provided bolts and rubber gasket. Ensure the gasket is correctly seated to prevent leaks between the tank and bowl.
Tighten bolts evenly and connect the flush mechanism if required. For wall-mounted designs or in-wall cisterns, follow the specific installation guidelines carefully as these styles may require more precise alignment.

Step 5: Reconnect the water supply
Attach the flexible water connector from the isolation valve to the inlet valve beneath the cistern. Turn the water back on slowly and allow the tank to fill.
Check all connection points carefully for leaks. Flush the newly installed toilet several times to confirm everything is connected properly and works correctly.
Step 6: Seal and finish
Apply a neat bead of bathroom-grade silicone around the base of the bowl, leaving a small gap at the rear to detect potential leaks in the future.
Clean the suite thoroughly and step back to appreciate your bathroom transformation and your hard work!
