Toilet Cistern Buttons and Flush Plates

The finishing touch for a royal flush

On the list of bathroom renovation priorities, toilet cistern buttons tend to sit close to the bottom. People rarely think about cistern buttons and flush plates, which means that they all look the same: just whatever comes standard with the toilet.

As a result, you can really notice when someone puts thought into their buttons or plate. When the flush button matches the tapware and robe hooks, it shows that every element of the space has been carefully considered.

Whether undertaking a full reno or just replacing a tired or broken button, this collection makes it easy to find the most functional and beautiful fit.

How to choose the right cistern button

Before you buy whichever cistern button looks best, you need to consider compatibility, flush type and finish.

Compatibility is the most important factor – and one that is often overlooked. Not all cistern buttons fit all cisterns. You need to check the diameter of the hole in your cistern lid, the depth of the cistern (which determines rod length), and whether your cistern is mechanical or pneumatic (air-operated systems are rarely used in residential applications, but are more common in commercial buildings and public amenities). It’s safest to stick with the same brand as your toilet, but many brands are compatible with each other.

Flush type is worth understanding before you buy. Australian toilets use a dual flush system, with half flush and full flush buttons incorporated into a single assembly, to comply with WELS water efficiency standards. But other countries don’t have the same rules, so it’s a risk to buy cistern buttons from overseas. There are also single flush buttons on the Australian market, such as those built for urinals, so double check that yours is a dual flush built for toilets.

The colour and finish of the button or plate should align with your bathroom aesthetic. A chrome button doesn’t pair well with brushed nickel tapware, for example. The good news: toilet cistern buttons are now available in a wide range of colours and finishes - classic chrome, matte black, gunmetal, brushed gold – so matching the look of your space has never been easier.

Key differences to consider

There’s a surprising amount of variety in toilet cistern buttons, so let’s review the different options that you’ll need to choose from.

Standard cistern buttons suit buyers who are replacing a button on a standard close-coupled or back-to-wall toilet. They're designed to drop into the existing hole in the cistern lid and connect to the flush valve via adjustable rods. They’re a straightforward swap in most situations, as long as you confirm the hole diameter and rod length before you buy.

Flush plates are for wall-hung and wall-faced toilet suites with concealed cisterns that are hidden behind the wall. Larger and generally rectangular or square shaped, these panels mount flush to the wall surface and activate the cistern behind it. There are plenty of flush plate finish options, and the look of this setup tends to be more refined than a standard button – but you can’t switch to a flush plate without replacing your entire toilet.

Accessible and raised-profile buttons are recommended for public bathrooms designed with accessibility in mind, or households with young children or elderly residents. A larger, more prominent button surface is easier to locate and operate, and some models are designed to meet accessibility standards that public amenities and commercial venues might need to abide by.
